PRESS RELEASE

Every week, Michael Johnathon picks up his long neck banjo or trusty Martin guitar and launches into a global celebration of folk music called the WoodSongs Old-Time Radio Hour. Hundreds of people line up to get tickets to see artists they don’t know sing songs they’ve never heard before in the historic Kentucky Theater in Lexington.

And each week, millions of people tune in to hear Michael and his guest artists explore the world of grassroots music on the all-volunteer run show. The multi-media broadcast airs on 491 radio stations worldwide, XM Satellite Radio, and on Public Television stations across the nation. Millions more worldwide have streamed shows online from the WoodSongs website.

On September 15th WoodSongs will reach the milestone 500th broadcast, a landmark event for both WoodSongs and the amazing community that helped make it possible. It places WoodSongs in the same league as other historic broadcasts, like the Grand Ole Opry, the Louisianna Hayride, and of course A Prairie Home Companion. Information on WoodSongs can be found online at woodsongs.com, including a massive and free acoustic music archive of past shows.

SPECIAL GUEST ARTIST: Richie Havens first rose to fame in the folk-music scene that also fostered Joan Baez and Bob Dylan. In 1969 Havens opened the Woodstock Festival. His performance received continuous ovations and he kept playing encores until he ran out of songs. Finally, he decided to improvise a version of "Motherless Child"; the song was featured in the Woodstock film, and became an international hit.

TICKETS ON SALE NOW: The 500th broadcast will be a special event evening and a fund raiser for the broadcast. There will be a wine/beer cash bar and food in lobby. Also, each ticket holder will get a copy of the WoodSongs 500th Broadcast Souvenir Program that will include the new Best of WoodSongs, Volume II CD, given free to every ticket holder that night. We suggest everyone dress up and help make it a special evening. Tickets are $30 each. WoodSongs Partners will be given the first opportunity to be part of the night. NO RESERVATIONS WILL BE TAKEN FOR THIS BROADCAST, instead a hard ticket will be issued by the Kentucky Theater only. Tickets on sale now! Call the Kentucky Theater at 859 231-7924 after 4pm.
